What is Liver Metastases?

Liver metastases, also known as secondary liver cancer, are the cancerous tumors that have spread (metastasized) to the liver from another somewhere else in the body. In most cases, the diagnosed cancer in the liver is metastatic.

Most liver metastases start from the colon, rectum, pancreas, stomach, esophagus, breast, lung, and melanoma before spreading to the liver.

The risk for liver metastases depends on the location of the original cancer. Most liver metastases start from the colon, rectum, pancreas, stomach, esophagus, breast, lung, kidney, and skin before spreading to the liver. 

Up to 70 percent of the individuals who have colorectal cancer generally develop liver metastases, because the blood supply from the intestines is connected directly to the liver.
