ARTERIOVENOSUS MALFORMATION

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are one of the vascular diseases that occur when a group of blood vessels in the body forms irregular, unhealthy connections between arteries and veins. AVMs may happen during the development before birth, as well as in adulthood.

The role of arteries in the body is to carry the oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain and cells. What veins do is similar to arteries but different in function. Vein’s role is to carry the oxygen-depleted blood back to the lungs. This perfect system works correctly if the capillaries form a direct connection among the arteries and veins. If the individual has an AVM, this means the system of capillaries between the arteries and veins is missing.

What Causes Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs)?

It is not hereditary and the cause of Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) is not known exactly. But some scientists believe that congenital factors may cause AVM.

Some individuals with Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) have symptoms while some show no signs. Mostly AVM will be diagnosed after bleeding or may be detected incidentally when MRI or computed tomography is performed for another reason.

What Are The Symptoms Of Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs)?

Arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) have quite different symptoms that change from one to another due to the place or the size of the AVMs. Since they are lesions that affect blood flow the most common symptoms are headaches, numbness, weakness on one side of the body…

AVMs are benign, which means they are not cancer. In Turkey, the AVM treatment is planned according to the size, location, and stage of the AVM. The treatment generally focuses on managing the symptoms and improving the lives of the individual.

Surgery may be an option if an AVM is in a sensitive or dangerous area and if it can be operated on. If the existence of AVM isn’t causing problems, then the doctor may recommend regular follow-up visits. There are no medicines or direct treatment for AVM but the symptoms can be treated.
